Shall we start?
Yes.
Okay.
How many times have you been here in Japan?
This is my tenth visit to Japan.
I come every January to give an annual forecast speech to the ToshiNippo incorporated.

And you have met Terumi, the president of JANet incorporated.
So tell us about what are the main differences you see between astrology here and in America?
Well, there are very many differences between astrology in America and in Japan.
For one thing, Astrology in America is applied in many many different ways.
We use astrology in the field of psychology to help us understand the character,
We use astrology in the employment agencies to figure out what types of people might work best in which companies,
We use astrology in trading to help us identify when market might reverse,
We also use astrology to make comments on current world events.
Am I okay? So far?
Yes. And I think in Japan, it seems that astrology is one of the subjects that come under the large heading of fortune telling.
Whereas in America, the concept of fortune telling is related to entertainment.
And although astrology can be used in that fasion as entertainment and predicting the future.
It is more often used as a vehicle to understand the times we are living in or the nature of our own personality.
Another big difference between astrology in America and in Japan
is that the astrology in America is very well organized.
We have many professional organizations in America.
There are five major professional astrology organizations.
The oldest one is the American Federation of astrologers founded in 1938.
The second oldest one is the International Society for Astrological Research founded in 1968.
The third one is the National Council for Geocosmic Research or NCGR.
And it was founded in 1971.
Then in 1982, the Association for Astrological Networking or AFAN was founded.
The fifth one was just founded recently, called OPA or the Organization for Professional Astrology.
Now three of these organizations provide certification programs for astrologers.
And so in America as a professional astrologer you identify by which organization you belong to or which organization you have been certified through.
So you have an identity in the field of astrology through these organizational affiliations.
For instance, I passed the AFA professional certification exam in 1972.
And because I also am a life member of American Federation of Astrologers.
Therefore, I am known as a professional life member of AFA or PLMAFA.
I'm also a certified astrological professional through ISAR.
So I'm also known as a CAP or certified astrological professional.
Both of these designation means that I have passed exams in the field of professional astrology.
The certification through ISAR also means I have passed the ethical exams.
So I think these are the main differences between the astrology in Japan and the astrology in America.
I'm talking about the other organizations in the world. For example, Astrological Associations of Great Britain and ...
You have AAGB in Great Britain which is one of the world's oldest and most respected astrologers organizations.
And you have the Federation of Austrarian Astrologers which is highly regarded in Austraria.
I think these are the major astrology organizations in the world.
So you have been associated with those organizations for long time since 1972, could you tell us how you are right now involving with these organizations.
I am a life member of every organization.
I am especially involved with ISAR the International Society for Astrological Research.
I've been elected to their board of directors three times now since 1992.
I have served as a president from 1994 to early 2001
And I'm currently a director on their board,
and my current function is to organize there by any of conference,
I'm also the head of the international relations division for that organization.
So the presentation here, you are holding right now, is one of the work as the international relations division?
Yes, that's one of the reasons. I am coordinating efforts between ISAR and JANet incorporated.
I wanted to say that the JANet is a new company that is providing astrological education in Japan.
And their educational effort is in compliance with ISAR certification requirments.
Therefore by going through the JANet educational possibilities one can be prepared to be certified by ISAR.
So that is one of my roles as international relations to develop this relationship between ISAR and JANet incorporated.
He has been involved more with British organization so far,
From his point of view, he thinks that there is a big difference between here and in States because the organizations seems to be democratic, because you have vote there and everything, so...
Well, this is true, you can not be on the board of directors of any of these organizations in America unless the membership votes you to be on the board.
For instance, with ISAR, we are voted for a four year term.
And every time the election comes up, there are twice as many people who run for those positions as the offices are available.
That way we avoid the problem of having one person run the same organization for the entire life.
It keeps the process dynamic.
So you have been involved so long, that I suppose you have faced lots of difficulties to be organized, you have been there from the very beginning of the organization.
I have lost many hairs because of it.
But seriously yes. Every organization has difficulties in being created and maintaining itself.
One of the organization I founded was AFAN.
Yes, I was one of the founders of AFAN.
And it formed because we had difficulties as members of one of the other organizations. We had difficulties with one of the other organizations so we had to found a new organization called AFAN.
But as a president of ISAR from 1994 to 2000, there is difficulties also in leading the organization.
With any organization, you need to get a group of people who share a common vision, who strive for the same purposes.
And then you also need to have leadership that respects the people in the organization.
The leadership has to be able to inspire the people in the organization to want to work.
And of course the greatest difficulty including any organization is getting people to work.
But when you have a leardership that is inspired and you have people working with the organization who are committed and hard working, it can work.
And ISAR has been able to achieve that in the last ten years.
And because we then develop projects that are attractive to our members, we can increase our membership.
There are two ways to increase membership.
You need to solve a problem that currently exists in the community.
Or you need to provide a perceived benefit to the members.
For instance, in early 1980's, astrology was considered illeagal in many states in the United States.
Many states considered the astrology as fortune telling.
And fortune telling was considered illeagal because of gypsies that used to come into the states and take money from the people and not provide good service.
So many states considered a fortune teller a vagrant or a beggar.
And if you practice any type of fortune telling, you were taken to jail or assessed the fine.
But this law which had been written back in the early 1900's was not enforced much after 1940.
1940, around world war II.
The laws were in effect until 1980, but they weren't enforced after world war II.

So astrologers practiced illeagally from 1940's to about 1980.
But then AFAN was formed.
and it was formed for the purpose of changing these old laws in the states of the United States.
So AFAN solved a problem for astrologers.
Their efforts made astrology leagal in all the states.
And as a result of that their membership grew.
More recently in the 1990's ISAR provided a benefit to the community.
ISAR began looking at astrology as a credible profession.
And it began offering programs that enhance professionalism.
Such as developing an ethics training workshop.
So professional astrologers were given instruction on how to behave ethically.
And as a result of that its membership grew from 200 to 1200.
Because astrologers wanted the respect of being treated as professionals in America.
So there you have two examples of how two organizations grew, one by solving a problem, another by providing perceived benefit to the community.
So we have gone through the past history of astrological organizations, but from now what is the big topic in astrology.
Oh, there are very big topics in America right now that we are working on.
The most exciting development in the last two years has been the creation of Kepler University.
It has just in the last two years been granted a credidation by the state of Washington to offer degree in astrology, a university degree in astrology.
And just last month, the state of Florida has granted Avalon College a accreditation as a college to offer degree in astrology.(※
So there are now two colledges in the United States in which a student can earn a degree in astrology.
And what's also exciting for you here in Japan is that JANet is an affiliate of the Avalon Colledge.
So the educational classes that JANet provides will result in a degree in astrology from Avalon colledge.
And both Avalon colledge and JANet are designing curriculms that will satisfy the requirments of ISAR certification.
Avalon colledge will not offer certification. Nor will Kepler colledge.
They will offer a degree that shows that you have studied the courses and passed their exams.
But to become certified as a professional astrologer, you must take a certification exam outside of the colledges.
It is a same thing in securities in United States. I go to University to study Economics, but I can not become involved as a manager of moneys unless I take a certification exam through the security exchanges.
It may be the same way with the law. You go to University and get degree in law, but then you take a bar exam to become a certified lawyer.
So ISAR is the certifying body. Kepler, Avalon and JANet are the University or colledge that you go through to get the education.
So there are good colledge, good education and good organization,
So what's the next step.
Yes, it is true. We have good organizations and we are just developing now good colledges just in last two years.
So it's very new and it's exciting what is developing in professional astrology in America right now.
I think once theses colledges and universities develop further along, the next step will be for these collodges and universities to develop employment placement agencies.
So once you graduate from one of these universities as an astrologer, you can be placed into employment as an astrologer in the business world.
Of course, many astrologers will prefer to have their own business.
But many others will prefer to work with a company.
Or perhaps a clinic to provide service to people.
I would be great, for instance, if a securities firm would hire a financial astrologer as one of its analysts.
Or perhaps maybe a major bank would hire a financial astrologer to work with its currency trading desk.
Because one of the great values of the astrology is that it is a very accurate tool in timing changes in the market place.
It is perhaps the most accurate tool that I know of to specifically time a change in the market.
Hence a currency trading desk or any trading desk could be enhanced by having somebody who provides that type of skill.
So I think the next step in the future that might be five or ten years away is for these universities and colledges that develop astrologers to be able to place these graduates into positions like this in societies.
It is just a dream right now. But then again colledges and universities to get degrees in astrology has been just a dream for many years until just two years ago.
That is why I see this is a very exciting time to live in if you were an astrologer.
I believe the field of astrology in societies and place of astrology could change remarkably in the next ten years as it's already started.
So effect of internet on astrology as a final question.
The internet is being great for the astrology and it will continue being great for the advancement of the astrology.
The internet has allowed information to be disperse quickly and efficiently unlike anytime before in history.
The internet is the information super-highway.
And what is astrology? It is information.
So this is the perfect medium for astrology to become rapidly understood and disseminated in the world.
Of course, it also means to be bad astrology disseminated, too.
So until we get these organizations practicing ethically, you know, there is a risk that the astrology that you come across may not be credible.
But as universities develop more and more knowledgable astrologers,
and organizations like ISAR require them to take ethics exams before they can be certified,
I think you'll see the future for astrology becoming more and more credible.
And the internet becomes a great aid in that effort.
It becomes a great aid because it alows education to take place in the convenience of your home.
You will soon be able to get education of astrology from the finest teachers and finest schools in the world.
This is also what JANet incorporated is providing.
They are translating the works of the best teachers of the astrology in the best universities and colledges of the astrology in Japanese.
So it's just the begining of new age for astrologers.
About earthquake. People are so sure that there will be a big earthquake in Tokyo in the near future, can you forecast all those things in astrology?
The thing about the astrology is that the principle of earthquake is Uranus,
But Uranus represents multitude of other possibilities as well.
For instance, they can be electrical storms, they can be strong winds, they can be electrical failures or power failures.
So when there is a very strong aspect to Uranus, there is a potencial for earthquake,
but we can never be sure it is going to be a earthquake, electrical storm, high wind or power failure.
So as astrologer we can forcast one of these possibilities are more highly probable at certain times, but we can not say for certain there will be an earthquake only.
For instance, between the years 2008 and 2010,
there will be a square aspect between Uranus and Saturn.
This happens about every eleven years.
And during that time it does tend to be major earthquakes somewhere in the world.
But it's nearly impossible to say that it will happen in Tokyo.
Because in America we think it's going to be California.
And in Hawaii, they will say it's going to be in Hawaii.
So any area that has vulnerability to a fault line could be affected.
That's why astrology might work well with geophysics sciencies to try to figure out together where the next big earthquake will occur at that time.
I do not think it's safe for an astrologer to make a prediction base only on astrology.
I think he should work with the experts in that other field in understanding as well.
メリマン: Question over here?
How many people in the total of these organizations.
In all of those organizations together, there are probably about 7500 astrologers.
How many financial astrologers like you?
Only me.
I would say there are probably maybe 100 to 200 people who practice financial astrology in the world.
But there are probably thousands of people who want the information that the financial astrologer provides.
You know you have, I'm going to embarass this person but you have one of the finest financial astrologers in the world right here today, Minakawa-san, Toshinippo.
He's the one of the best.
He would not consider himself an astrologer, but he understands the combinations of cycles and how markets work and he knows astrology.

There is nobody else on the planet who understands my work as well as this man.
Well, thank you very much. I appreciate your questions and I appreciate the audience in warm response and having me here. Thank you so much.
